Edward V 1731-32 Medalist: Jean Dassier Swiss This medal of Edward V belongs to the English Monarchs series by the Swiss medalist Jean Dassier (1676-1763). Dassier was the chief engraver of the Geneva mint, and the group to which this medal belongs (2014.457.1-10) are among his most important medallic works, part of a series of 33 medals of the English sovereigns begun during his second stay in London and approved by Queen Caroline. These medals represent an important European medalist in one of his most significant series. The English Monarchs are also important precedents for medal making in 18th- and 19th-century Britain, examples of which are also found in Museum's collection.. Edward V. This medal commemorates her coronation in Pressburg (now Bratislava, Slovak Republic) on 25 June 1741. Maria Theresa practiced her equestrian skills for weeks in order to enact the demanding culmination of the Hungarian coronation ceremony that is depicted on the medals reverse. Wearing the ancient crown and mantle of Saint Stephen, first king of Hungary, Maria Theresa mounted a black charger and rode up an earthen hill made from all the kingdoms lands. At the summit, she raised her sword and turned her rearing steed in the four directions of the compass while vowing to defend Hungary against all enemies.
