Joseph Lister (died 1912) was a British surgeon, medical scientist, experimental pathologist and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery and preventative medicine. The caption for this 1912 image reads: The Man who saved a million lives. It is probably no exaggeration to say that Lord Lister, the great English surgeon, has saved a million lives, for without his wonderful discoveries nine-tenths of the operations that are performed in hospitals of the world would result in death.
