Her Life Saved Nine Times -- Mrs. Colin McKenzie smiles at Boston City Hospital as nurse Pauline Smith adjusts contact strap on her arm to instrument which was brought her back to life nine times, a Heart Association announcement revealed. The instrument was developed by Dr. Paul M. Zoll. The instrument does not restore a damaged heart but delivers stimulus through a connection attached to the patient's wrist. Fingers of Mercy. Aboard a Coast Guard manned LST during the invasion of Cape Gloucester, New Britain, a Navy doctor and Coast Guard pharmacist's mate perform an emergency operation on a wounded man. He carried to safety one of his two brothers; then, terribly burned and in spite of excruciating pain, he went back for the other. To-day for that "courage of the highest order" John Bamford becomes the youngest-ever holder of the George Cross. This picture was taken last night and shows John in hospital. December 17, 1952. British Help American Wounded- Rehabilitation and Treatment, UK, 1944 A serviceman undergoes short wave diathermy treatment in a mesh cubicle or 'cage' at a hospital somewhere in Britain. Short wave diathermy is the application of radio waves around of 50-100MHz frequency to the body to induce deep heat in tissues, used as part of physiotherapy, which can be applied continuously or pulsed. The original caption states that 'it promotes deep healing - it heals septic conditions through dressings, for instance. This machine gives off wireless waves which interferes with short wave transmission. That is the reason from the wire box, which breaks up the waves'. A nurse administers the treatment.

North Korean Communist prisoners-of-war are receiving expert medical treatment and care at a field hospital near Pusan, Republic of Korea, operated by a volunteer Swedish medical unit under the United Nations Unified Command. The Staff of 168 doctors, nurses, and technicians was chosen from over 1,000 Swedish volunteers who applied for service with the UN forces in Korea.
