Youngest Winner Of G.C. - Saved Brothers From Blazing Room -- Fifteen-year-old Jack Bamford, youngest holder of the George Cross (civilian equivalent of the V.C.), in bed at the General Hospital, Nottingham, where he is recovering from burns received in the heroic act which won the award. With Jack are Sister M. Odey and the Reverend A. Doxey, who has promised to accompany the boy when he goes to Buckingham Palace to receive the George cross.Last October, Jack plunged through flames to rescue two of his brothers, trapped in the bedroom of their blazing home at Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire. Blood Drying Unit- Processing Blood in the Laboratory, Cambridge, England, UK, 1943 A member of staff at the blood drying unit at Cambridge University places a lid onto a transfusion bottle containing sterile, filtered plasma or serum, ready for drying. The special drying cap consists of a perforated metal screw cap covered with a wad of cotton wool between two layers of muslin, and is fastened in place by a ring of stainless steel. The worker is wearing a special mask made from wire, rubber and plastic. The wire forms arms, like a pair of glasses, which hook over the wearer's ears. It passes over the bridge of the nose, (the wire has a rubber coating at this point) and then hooks through a transparent plastic bag which is suspended from the wire over the wearer's face, covering the mouth. The wire forms a rigid rim to the plastic bag, keeping it slightly open, probably to catch any droplets of moisture from the wearer's nose.

Foster Parents Plan London Nursery- Caring For Displaced Children, London, England, 1941 In the air raid shelter of the 'Foster Parents Plan for War Children' Nursery in Hampstead, London, the night nurse checks on the toddlers as they sleep in their bunks. The shelter appears to be in the basement of the nursery. The bunks have netting or meshing over the sides to stop the children falling out. As the bunks, which are built along a wall, are three tiers high, without the 'cage' the children could seriously hurt themselves if they did fall out.

$British Medical Services in the Second World War Specialist Medical Service: A soldier with a fractured tibia and fibia having his leg placed in skeletal traction at a specialist orthopaedic centre in Cairo, Egypt. This was one of five such centres in the Middle East. Officially the hospital had 150 beds but had as many as 230 cases at one time.$
