Prisoner of Nazis for 18 months in Auschwitz and Belsen prison camps, Madam Janine Ferber, from Poland, today shows the branded number 75366 which was burnt into her forearm. Madam Ferber arrived at Victoria Docks in the motor-ship Tai Yin. Her husband died in a gas chamber about six months after the couple's deportation from Paris in February 1944. Sydney will be her future home. December 30, 1946.

Bering Sea Patrol- Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH, Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska (5 of 10). In a schoolhouse at Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, an Eskimo woman receives an examination from Lieutenant Fred Abramson, Public Health Service dentist assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH. St. Lawrence is about 40 miles from Siberia. Most of the Eskimos living here speak Russian and American. During the four-moth cruise, on her first Bering Sea Patrol, the KLAMATH carried dental and medical aid to natives in remote villages of Alaska as far into the Arctic as Wainwright, in cooperation with the Territorial Department of Health and the Alaska Native Service. This service was performed in addition to regular duties of the Patrol.

Turkish Opium For Britain- the USE of Opium in British Medicine, UK, 1943 A worker at an opium processing laboratory takes a bottle of morphine hydrochloride from the store. She is wearing a mask to prevent any inhalation of the powder as she works. The opium from which this morphine and its allied salts have been extracted was imported from Turkey by the Ministry of Health. According to the original caption: 'Extraction processes are secret. The final products are morphine; codeine with its salts, used for analgesic tablets; ethyl morphine and diamorphine, both products of morphine; papaverine, used for asthma and sore throats. Products are kept behind a locked door. A warning bell rings whenever the door is opened. Names of all workers are registered with the British Home Office'.

We should work less and relax more.Among the people asked on the best way to do this was 61 year old Sir Paul Dukes, former British Chief of Intelligence in Russia and Yoga disciple. He said the best way to clear the lungs and refresh the mind is to take deep breathe of fresh air through the nose and exhale through the mouth. Mouth-to-Mouth Breathing (Expired Air Resuscitation). In Mouth-to-AIRWAY, the same techniques of preparing victim in Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in photo series, then - Approach victim from the top of his head. Force the mouth open with one hand. - Insert the proper end of the airway along the curve of the tongue with the other hand until the flange comes to rest at the victim's lips. Do not push the tongue back into the throat. If the tongue is in the way, push its base forward with the finger. If the victim is an adult, insert the long end of the large airway; if he is a large child, insert the short end of the large airway; if he is a small child or a baby insert the short end of the small airway. The part of the airway which remains outside serves as mouthpiece for the rescuer (as shown here). Airways come in two sizes: (1) combined adult and large child size, and (2) combined child and infant size (See Ill. No. 8).

Air Raid Precautions on the British Home Front- Anti-gas Instruction, C 1941 A man thoroughly washes his arm after being splashed with liquid blister gas. He is using soap and water and a nail brush to scrub away any remaining gas particles. ARP guidelines suggest changing the water three times during this process. This photograph has clearly been posed by a Ministry of Information model for use in some kind of leaflet, exhibition or poster.
