Jacques-Joseph Ebelman on his Deathbed. Artist: Louis-Rémy Robert (French, 1810-1882). Dimensions: 19 x 24.5 cm (7 1/2 x 9 5/8 in.). Date: March 31, 1852.This paper negative, from the collection of Robert's descendants, shows Jacques-Joseph Ebelmen, director of the Sèvres porcelain factory, on his deathbed March 31, 1852. From its inception, photography was enlisted to record the faces of the deceased-it was, in effect, a new type of death mask. As the antipode to proper representation of the living world, the negative is particularly appropriate for a depiction of death. In it, Ebelmen's head-with pallid skin and white hair-rests on black pillows, and the slight solarization of the negative suggests a spiritual aura. The Brave Don't Cry -- Seven-year-old Richard Colman was not feeling well. His arm hurt after an inoculation. Life didn't seem worth living. Then his teacher sent him long to see Mr. Hart, the headmaster. And Mr. Hart (seen talking to Richard) said all those grown-up things about bravery that make a boy feel fine. The picture was made during a demonstration at Hextable air raid precautions headquarters.During the recent "War Scare", when Frantic efforts were being made to supply every member of the population with a gas mask.It was realised that it was quite impossible to fit gas-masks to babies of a tender Age, although PE Haps from the point of view of the nation's future it was just these innocent beings that it would be most important to protect.
