Pensioners Keep Walking -- For the children four pensioners, average age 70, have their shoes examined in the laboratories of a shoe manufacturing firm at Street, Somerset, after walking some 3,000 miles - to help the rising generation. Their shoes have been soled with a new materials which, when thoroughly tested and passed as satisfactory, will be use for children's footwear. Pensioners are invaluable for this testing work because they like the gentle relaxation of walking. Treating The Mentally Sick -- The advance of scientific research and the closer co-operation of doctors in every branch of medicine has transferred the old asylums into hospitals for treatment. Patients are now treated for mental sickness, with no more embarrassment than if they were physically ill. Patients run their own sports clubs, cafeterias social clubs and libraries. Male patients work on the libraries. Male patients work on the hospital farms while female patients give a helping hand in the laundry. Nearly all mental hospital Services under part of the Regional Hospital Services under the National Health Act of 1948. New War Opens on Factory Front- X-ray Screening For Tuberculosis, London, England, 1943 A female factory worker hands her x-ray identification card to a clerk in the makeshift clinic being held in the factory shelter canteen, who fills in all necessary details, such as name, age, address, occupation and if there is any contact with TB at home. In case of recall, details of her shifts for the next 2 weeks are also recorded. The worker then moves on into the x-ray room.

The Reconstruction of 'an Incident'- Civil Defence Training in Fulham, London, 1942 A busy scene in the treatment room of the First Aid Post, set up in a room in a school, probably Mary Boon School, on the corner of Earsby Street and Bishop King's Road, near Avonmore Road. In the foreground, a nurse treats a woman with a head injury, whilst another nurse cleans the wounded leg of a young boy, who had been rescued from under a pile of rubble. In the background, a doctor and superintendent nurse deal with a back injury. Several other nurses can be seen around the room dealing with various injuries. Posters on the walls in the background encourage people to support the war effort in a number of ways.

A New Simple Device, Developed By The draeger woks in Lubeck, German, has now been introduced by the Hamburg Police. The device ascertains the alcohol contents of the breath and consists of transparent bag, of known volume, at test tube and a rubber mouth piece. A driver suspected of being "under the influence" is asked to inflate the bag fully. If alcohol vapurs are present, the yellow coloured reagent in the tube turns green. March 01, 1955. This modern mobile cradle for the premature baby keeps it supplied with oxygen, while, with the aid of modern instruments, observation can be kept on the temperature and humidity. Blood Plasma for Train Crash Victim - With all the grim tragedy showing on their faces railway workers, fireman and ambulance men carefully bring a stratcher case along the platform at Stratford at 4.30 this morning (Thursday). Nurses hold a bottle and tube as the victim receives blood plasma -- vital to keep the victim alive. Nurses worked all night helping and rescuing injured who had been trapped in the railway crash which occurred last night between Stratford and Layton when one train crashed into the rear of another. Despite his age of 65, veteran oarsman George Rogers is physically superior to the average man of 30, So said N.S.W. Professor of Physiology F. S. Cotton after he had conducted a special test on Rogers yesterday. The test included a ***** climb up Jacob's ladder, taking the steps two at a time and paced by a University student. Rogers's blood pressure was taken at the bottom and top of the steps. "It will be an important contribution to human knowledge if Mr. Rogers will continue to maintain a reasonable degree of physical training, provided that he becomes increasingly careful with advancing years," said the professor.
