Fashion News.The Cabinet des Modes offered readers highly detailed information about the illustrated clothes and accessories. It reported, for instance, on new clothing styles, such as the English redingote’ 1; on accessories and embellishments, such as oversized muffs, buttons, ribbons and clasps; and finally, on the latest interior furnishings. For its male audience there was the fitted jacket 2 and the popular Androsmane, a hat with an upturned brim 3.

The book was a continuation of the series on the costumes of the 12th to 15th centuries published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri from 1830. Georges Duplessis (1834-1899) was curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902) was an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for many public buildings and churches. He was named professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874.

Journal des Dames et des Modes: Mens Fashion.The Journal des Dames et des Modes occasionally provided coverage of mens styles. These illustrations give a good picture of trends in mens clothing from 1797 to 1825. During the 18th century, gentlemen wore culotte (knee-breeches) 1. These fell out of fashion with the elimination of strict class distinctions during the French Revolution, to be replaced by a type of long trouser(s) known as pantalon à la Hussarde 2. These were worn with hussar boots. ‘Pantaloons 3 were trousers pulled tight with an elastic strap under the instep. Carrick 4 coats with a double collar were popular, and in the evenings men wore a special dress cloak 5.

It reported, for instance, on new clothing styles, such as the English redingote’ 1; on accessories and embellishments, such as oversized muffs, buttons, ribbons and clasps; and finally, on the latest interior furnishings. For its male audience there was the fitted jacket 2 and the popular Androsmane, a hat with an upturned brim 3.
