Japanese Oil Dump Is Left in Flames on HalmaheraSmoke and Flames rise from a Japanese oil dump on ***** Halmahera Island in the southwest Pacific, after a low,level attack by B,25 Mitchell bombers of the Fifth U.S. Army Air Force and the Far East Air Forces. The attack preceded U.S. landings on Morotai, off the northeast tip of Halmahera, where the Japanese had not expected an attack. The landings neutralized the last important enemy base between New Guinea and the Philippines, and provided an air base only 300 miles (480 km.) from the enemy,held U.S. islands. U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, going ashore with the invading forces, said: "Defeat now stares Japan in the face." October 11, 1944.
