Cartoon on the reinsurance treaty between Germany and Russia, Jan Holswilder, 1887 print Otto von Bismarck stands with his back against a Russian officer. The reinsurance vendor (Rückversicherungtrag) was a secret treaty that he concluded with Russia, outside Austria and Hungary. A doll with a reference to the Schnabele affair, an incident almost led to war between France and Germany, is bulging out of his pocket. The dialogue under the print refers to the tense international relationships at that time. Santa Claus has arrived by sleigh in a Union army camp to distribute gifts. This was the moment that Nast conceived and introduced our modern image of Santa Claus.
