German sailors stranded in New York City since the outbreak of the war in Europe, were taken to Ellis Island. The German aliens were rounded up by U.S. Immigration Service agents and police early on the morning of May 7, 1941.

Haigh Leaves Court After Death Sentence -- Police hold back the crowd pressing forward to catch a glimpse of John George Haigh being driven away from the ancient Assize Court here after he had been found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of 69-year-old widow Mrs. Olive Durand-Deacon.The jury reached their decision after only thirteen minutes deliberation.Although Haigh was only accused of the murder of Mrs. Durand-Deacon, it had been said that in a statement he confessed to the murder of nine people, and of destroying their bodies in acid after drinking some of their blood.
