Four Coast Guard Invaders Honor Alexander Hamilton on 154th Birthday of Service. Four fighting Coast Guardsmen, with a total record of 15 invasions, stand at attention and salute before the statue of Alexander Hamilton in Washington, D.C., on the occasion of the 154th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard. Hamilton was instrumental in founding the service on Aug. 4, 1790. The four invaders (left to right) are: Gene Oxley, 20, seaman first class, of Indianapolis, Indiana, who participated in the landings on North Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Normandy and who had three boats shot out from under him in seven hours on D-Day; Delba L. Nivens, coxswain, of Amarillo, Texas, who landed troops in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Normandy and who piloted a flaming, troop-packed landing barge to the French beach; Ken Riley, specialist third class, of Parsons, Kansas, who fought the Japs in the Gilberts, at Kwajalein, Eniwetok and Saipan; and John S. Naval Officer Wins Three Awards For Undisclosed Deeds - Lt.-Cdr. E.O. Gidden G.C., G.M., O.B.E., R.N., with his wife and six-months-old baby, Michael John.Three high awards - the George Cross, George Medal and O.B.E., have been won by Lieutenant-Commander E.O. Gidden, R.N., for deeds which have not been disclosed. When the O.B.E. was announced all that the citation said was that he received it for "great bravery and steadfast devotion to duty." Lt. Cdr. Gidden, whose home is in Hampstead, London, ran a small garage business before the war, and joined the Navy soon after the war began. His twin brother, Major J. Gidder, R.A., is serving in the Middle East. September 29, 1943.
