Union Civil War generals of the departments of the east, 1862-1867.Artist: J Rogers

Mehmet Emin Pasha (March 28, 1840 - October 23, 1892) born Isaak Eduard Schnitzer was a physician, naturalist and governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria (Sourthern Sudan) on the upper Nile. 'Pasha' was a title conferred on him in 1886 and thereafter he was referred to as 'Emin Pasha'. The revolt of Muhammad Ahmad that began in 1881 had cut Equatoria off from the outside world by 1883, and the following year Karam Allah marched south to capture Equatoria and Emin. In 1885 Emin and most of his forces withdrew further south, to Wadelai near Lake Albert. Cut off from communications to the north, he was still able to exchange mail with Zanzibar through Buganda. Emin was rescued by Henry Morton Stanley and the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition in 1888, arriving at Bagamoyo on the Tanzanian coast in 1890.

The 1906 caption reads: CECIL RHODES TESTIFYING AT THE JAMESON INQUIRY.The Jameson Raid occurred in 1895, when a band of Englishmen rode suddenly into the South African Republic, the Transvaal, and tried to raise a rebellion there. The English ruler of South Africa, Mr. Cecil Rhodes, and even the English Government itself, were accused of having planned the raid, and there was a Parliamentary inquiry, which many people have regarded as a mere " whitewashing." Cecil Rhodes is seated in the front of the picture; the Prince of Wales, as Edward VII, then was, is at the extreme left.

L.A. Wiltz, Democrat, forcibly taking possession of the Speaker's Chair in the Louisiana State House, Jan. 4, 1875. This was a planned usurpation of the leadership positions of the Louisiana House of Representatives. The minority Democrats ignored all parliamentary procedure as they forced through voice votes, followed by a display of pistols by men wearing 'Assistant Sergeant of Arms' badges. The disorder ended when federal troops entered the chamber, removed the five illegally elected Democrats, followed by their colleagues. The Republican majority, stayed and continued the day's business (BSLOC_2019_6_20)
