The late 1800s caption reads:" Geneva Board of Arbitration settling Alabama claims." The Alabama Claims were a series of demands for damages made by the United States against Great Britain for the attacks on Union merchant ships by Confederate Navy commerce raiders during the American Civil War. In 1871, the United States and Great Britain established an arbitration commission to resolve the claims. The arbitration took place in Geneva, Switzerland, which was chosen because it was neutral and had good international communications. The arbitration commission issued its decision in September 18

This illustration shows President Hayes and his cabinet receiving Chen Lan Pin and the first resident Chinese embassy in the United States on September 28, 1878. The idea was to: Unite the East and the West under an enlightened and progressive civilization. After Hayes became president, Congress passed a bill to prevent the Chinese from coming to the U.S. Hayes vetoed the bill. He then made arrangements to receive a Chinese embassy at the White House (seen here).

Here, Secret Service Director Colonel Lafayette Baker sits and studies maps of the area where Booth was believed to be hiding in Maryland or Virginia. The portrait, in wood-engraving form, illustrates a long article published by Harper's Weekly on May 13, 1865. According to the news story, government agents found Booth in a barn near Port Royal, Virginia, and demanded that he surrender. He refused, and when they warned him that soldiers would set fire to the barn, Booth responded: "Well then, my brave boys, prepare a stretcher for me." Booth was
