François Joseph Westermann (1751-1794). General de Brigade during the French Revolution. He played a leading role in the overthrow of the French monarchy on 10 August 1792, where he commanded a unit of fédérés (federates) in the attack on the Tuileries Palace. Rejoining the army, he accompanied General Charles François Dumouriez in his campaigns with the Army of the North and the Army of the Ardennes, and assisted him in his negotiations with the Duke of Brunswick. He served under Dumouriez in the invasion of the Netherlands, although he was arrested for treason as an accomplice after Dumouriez's desertion in April 1793. Denounced by Jean-Paul Marat to the National Convention, Westermann succeeded in proving his innocence and was sent with the rank of brigadier general to quell the revolt in the Vendée.
