Simón Bolívar, the dashing Liberator, conceived of a brilliant yet seemingly suicidal plan: he would take his 2,000+ man army, cross the mighty Andes in 1819, and hit the Spanish where they were least expecting it: in neighboring New Granada (Colombia), where a small Spanish army held the region unopposed.

Ancient Rome, 4th century BC. After the sack of Rome by the Gauls, the survivors of the city took refuge in the Capitol, raised on one of the city's hills and also where the temple of Juno was located. Inside the temple lived the sacred geese, used for sacrifices in honour of the goddess Juno. One night, the Gauls tried to attack the Romans who had taken refuge there. They climbed the hill, taking advantage of the silence of the night. The Roman guards and the dogs had fallen asleep, but the Gauls raiders encountered the geese, which became frightened and made a great fuss, waking the Romans. They were able to respond and repel the attack. However, the resistance to the Gauls' siege was prolonged and the Romans decided to pay a ransom to the Gauls in exchange for their leaving the city. The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

The Hurricane of 1900 made landfall on September 8, 1900, in the city of Galveston, Texas, in the United States. It had estimated winds of 145 miles per hour (233 km/h) at landfall, making it a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. It was the deadliest hurricane in US history. The hurricane caused great loss of life with the estimated death toll between 6,000 and 12,000 individuals; the number most cited in official reports is 8,000, giving the storm the third-highest number of deaths or injuries of any Atlantic hurricane, after the Great Hurricane of 1780 and 1998's Hurricane Mitch. Battle at Morgarten. This remarkable battle first established the independence of Switzerland. The land had revolted against Austria, and an army several thousand strong marched to subdue it. A little force of 1300 Swiss peasants awaited the foe at the head of a narrow alpine pass. As the Austrians advanced, a band of 50 Swiss exiles began rolling rocks down on them from the heights above. The rocks became avalanches, the invaders were thrown into utter confusion, the Swiss army charged, and the rout was complete.
