On June 17, 1775, early in the Revolutionary War (1775-83), the British defeated the Americans at the Battle of Bunker Hill in Massachusetts. Despite their loss, the inexperienced colonial forces inflicted significant casualties against the enemy, and the battle provided them with an important confidence boost during the Siege of Boston (April 1775-March 1776). Although commonly referred to as the Battle of Bunker Hill, most of the fighting occurred on nearby Breeds Hill.

The First Matabele War was fought in 1893 between the British South Africa Company and the Ndebele (Matabele) people. The Battle of the Shangani was fought near the Shangani river on 25 October 1893, in what is now Zimbabwe. A large force of Matabele warriors attacked a column of the British South Africa Company, but were repulsed with heavy loss of life to the Matabele force. Brigade attack at Dybbol on April 18 1864 after painting by Vilhelm Rosendtand The Battle of Dybbol was the key battle of the Second Schleswig War, fought between Denmark and Prussia. The battle was fought on the morning of 18 April 1864, following a siege that began on 7 April. Denmark suffered a severe defeat which ultimately decided the outcome of the war. Vilhelm Jacob Rosenstand (1838 -1915) was a Danish painter and illustrator. His best known work is a mural decorating the banqueting hall in the University of Copenhagen He painted genre works from Denmark and the south of Europe as well as portraits of artists, scenes from Danish literary history and from the history of Denmark up to the beginning of the 20th century. He was also a competent illustrator.
