American Revolution. Surrender British army at Yorktown, Virginia, Oct. 19, 1781. James Armistead, was African American slave whose Virginia owner allowed him to enlist under Lafayette. He became the General's valet, but was also a spy. During the 1781 Battle of Yorktown, disguised as a fugitive slave, he gathered critical intelligence for the Americans. The Imperial Prince of Germany, Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl von Preuben (1831-1888), the future Frederick III of Germany, shortly after his arrival in Rome, notified Cardinal Jacobini, Secretary of State of Pope Leo XIII, through the Germanic minister accredited to the Holy See, von Schloezer, of his wish to visit and pay his respects to the Head of the Catholic Church. The visit took place on the afternoon of 18 December 1883, after having met with the Kings of Italy in the Quirinal Palace. Arrival of the Prince at the Vatican Cortile. October 3rd banquet des Gardes du Corps du Roi in Versailles, which Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and the Dauphin attended at dessert time, the King's guards put on the white royal cocarde. The false news quickly reaches Paris that the guards had trampled on the tricolor and causes outrage. This was set against the backdrop of the French Revolution of 1789

'The Louisiana outrages--President Grant demands unconditional surrender.' President Ulysses Grant holds his 'Proclamation Regarding Disturbances in Louisiana, Sept 15, 1874'. It commanded 'disorderly persons to disperse and retire peaceably to their respective abodes within five days'.
