Battle of Bad Axe, Aug. 1-2, 1832, was the final battle of the Black Hawk War. 500 Sauk (Sac) and Fox warriors, women and children were defeated and retreating to the west side of the Mississippi. The United States Army regulars and militia followed them to engage in a one-sided fight from a steamboat with artillery. 70 settlers and US soldiers died in the four month war, while half of Black Hawk's original band of 11,000 died of wounds or hardship (BSLOC_2019_8_86)

THE WAR IN SOUTH AMERICA

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade was a prolonged military operation undertaken by the German Army Group North against Leningradhistorically and currently known as Saint Petersburgin the Eastern Front theatre of World War II. The siege started on 8 September 1941, when the last road to the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the siege was finally lifted on 27 January 1944

The British 1868 Expedition to Abyssinia was a punitive expedition carried out by armed forces of the British Empire against the Ethiopian Empire. Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia, also known as 'Theodore', imprisoned several missionaries and two representatives of the British government. The punitive expedition launched by the British in response required the transportation of a sizable military force hundreds of miles across mountainous terrain lacking any road system. The force consisted of 13,000 British and Indian soldiers, 26,000 camp followers and over 40,000 animals, including elephants. It set sail from Bombay in upwards of 280 steam and sailing ships. The advance guard of engineers landed at Zula on the Red Sea, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Massawa. The decisive battle took place at the mountain fortress of Magdala on April 10-11, 1868. It was intended as a base for campaigns into Germania and until its destruction during the Revolt of the Batavi in 70 AD it was occupied by 8,000 to 10,000 legionaries; and was the main base of the Classis germanica.
