Union Brigadier General Ulysses Grant in portrait taken in Cairo, Illinois at the beginning of the US Civil War. He has a square cut beard, below his closer cut chin beard. This portrait created his public image when he became famous after the Battle of Fort Donelson, in Feb. 1862. It remained his public image until the March 1864 Mathew Brady portrait appeared (BSLOC_2018_7_71)
