. 10 Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces Pte Inwood was awarded the Victoria Cross, aged 27, for the following action: 'During the period 19 September - 22 September 1917 in an attack at Polygon Wood, near Ypres, Belgium, Private Inwood moved forward alone through the Allied barrage, capturing an enemy strong-point, killing several and taking nine prisoners. 'During the evening, he volunteered for a special all-night patrol which went out 600 yards in front of the Allied line, and succeeded in bringing back valuable information. In the early morning of 21 September he again went out in company with another man and they located a machine gun which was causing much trouble. They bombed it so effectively that only one gunner survived and he was brought in as a prisoner, with the gun.' Pte Inwood was born in 1890 in Broken Hill, Australia. He was one of three brothers who volunteered for military service on outbreak of war in 1914. He served in Gallipoli in 1915, during which time he was

. 70 Brigade, 15 Division, Royal Field Artillery Lt Nairn enlisted in July 1915 and received his commission in February 1916. He was posted to the Western Front in July 1916 and died, aged 18, of wounds received on 28 September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892 21 April 1918), known as the Red Baron, he was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during the First World War. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories.

. 12 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps No 12 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, was formed at Netheravon on 14 February 1915, out of a flight of No 1 Squadron. The original intention was that one flight should have Avro 504s and the other, Moranes. The Avros arrived, but by April of that year, the Squadron was completely equipped with BE 2cs, using the Avros only for training. Work up for France commenced and on 6 September, 12 Squadron arrived at St Omer to become Headquarters squadron for long-range reconnaissance. It flew its first operation, a photographic reconnaissance mission of the Hanbourdin-Seclin-Lille-Roubaix area, on 9 September. Three days later, the squadron scored its first 'kill' when, flying an 80 HP Gnome-engined Bristol Scout, Captain Strange, C Flight Commander, drove down a German aircraft over Comines. Although never intended for armour, as the war escalated the BE2c carried a variety of weapons and soon found a role as a light-medium bomber. Most of the two-seat aircraft

. 7 Battalion, Middlesex Regiment Lt Adamson was educated at City of London School and was studying at Merton College, Oxford (October 1914 - March 1915) when he interrupted his studies to enlist. He received his commission on 5 March 1915, subsequently serving with C Company on the Western Front from July to August 1917 and again from October 1917 to August 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross on 28 May 1918. Aged 23, Lt Adamson was killed in action near Croisilles, France, on 24 August 1918. He is buried at Bellacourt Military Cemetery. Santiago Cortés González (1897 - May 2, 1937), better known as 'Captain Cortez', Spanish military Infantry and the Civil Guard. In 1936, being captain stationed in Jaen, led the revolt of a large group of civil guards in the Shrine of Our Lady of Cabeza and assumed command of the same during the eight months of the siege to which they were subjected by troops the Republican side to completion on May 1, 1937. Taken prisoner, died the next day because of war injuries

Cyril Newall, Chief of the Air Staff. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Cyril Louis Norton Newall, 1st Baron Newall, GCB, OM, GCMG, CBE, AM (15 February 1886 - 30 November 1963) was a senior officer of the British Army and Royal Air Force. He commanded units of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force in the First World War, and served as Chief of the Air Staff during the first years of the Second World War. From 1941 to 1946 he was the Governor-General of New Zealand.

Adolfo Prada Vaquero. (1883-1962) Spanish Army officer who remained loyal to the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War. On December 1936, he led a division in the Second Battle of the Corunna Road. In 1938 he was the commander of the Andalusia Army. On March 1939, he supported Casado's coup and was appointed commander of the Army of the Centre. On 28 March, he surrendered to the Nationalists.

Ministry of Information First World War Official Collection James Crichton (Private) VC Auckland Regiment, N.Z. On 30th September 1918 during an advance, he was wounded but he went forward, swam across a river with a message and saved a bridge from destruction at Crevecouer.

. 4 Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Captain Burrows enlisted in the West Riding Regiment in 1914. He received his commission in January 1915 and was posted to the Western Front in July where he became a casualty of a gas attack near Ypres. Captain Burrows was killed at Neuve Eglise aged 23 on 14 April 1918. He is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial. 'C' Company, 10 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force Signaller Thorn was a teacher in Broken Hill, New South Wales before enlisting on 31 August 1915. He was became a corporal in the 27th Battalion in January 1916. He joined the 10th Battalion upon reaching Egypt. He arrived in France in April 1916. Together with his brother Private Arthur Thorn, he became a signaller because of a 'deep repugnance to even the thought of taking a life'. He was killed in action on 24 July 1916 during the First Battle of Pozieres, aged 27. He is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. . Army Chaplains' Department (attached Gordon Highlanders) The Reverend De Vine, a graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge, was ordained in 1913. He served as curate of St Philip's, Birmingham until the outbreak of war in 1914. De Vine was posted to the Western Front with the Gordon Highlanders in May 1915. He was killed by an exploding shell on 27 April 1916, aged 36, and is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery. Jack Mantle, Deserted Navy To Become Soldier, Is Free -- Less than two months after a Chatham naval court-martial had dismissed him the Service and sentenced him to twelve months imprisonment for desertion, Jack Mantle, who served nearly five years in the Army while absent from the Navy, walked out of Maidstone jail today-a free man. In February 1939, ***** Mantle, than a Royal Naval able-seaman, went absent from Chatham Naval Barracks whilst upset over the death of a favourite sister.
