. 40 Battalion, Machine Gun Corps Lt Light was educated at Monkton Combe School, near Bath and Hertford College, Oxford. He enlisted with No 4 Officers Cadet Battalion at Oxford, England, on 11 July 1916 while the Battle of the Somme was in progress on the Western Front. He received his commission and was posted to the Western Front with 188 Company, Machine Gun Corps on 4 July 1917. He fought in the Battle of Passchendaele and was wounded on 14 November 1917. On returning to active service, he joined 120 Company, Machine Gun Corps and fought in the action at Bullecourt on 25 February 1918. He was reported missing, aged 20, at Gommecourt during the Allied retreat on the night of 26 March 1918. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery. Other memorials which bear his name include those at Monkton Combe School near Bath, Alexandra Park at Hastings, Sussex and St Mary-in-the Castle Church also at Hastings. Aleksandr Mikhailovich Vasilevsky (1895 - 1977) was a Russian career officer in the Red Army who was promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1943. He was the Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces and Deputy Minister of Defense during World War II, as well as Minister of Defense from 1949 to 1953. As the Chief of the General Staff, Vasilevsky was responsible for planning and coordinating almost all decisive Soviet offensives in World War II, from the Stalingrad counteroffensive to the assault on East Prussia and Konigsberg.

. 8 Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment Captain Mason, a scientist, graduated with first class honours from London University and was a lecturer at Bristol University before the outbreak of war in 1914. He enlisted as a private initially in the Civil Service Rifles and subsequently with the Bristol University Officer Training Corps. Captain Mason received his commission in November 1914 and joined the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was promoted to captain in January 1916 and was killed in action, aged 27, at La Boisselle on 23 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. He is commmemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Photograph of Marshal Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934), sitting at a strategic map. A veteran of the Franco-Prussian War, he was recalled from retirement on the outbreak of World War I, winning decisive victories on the Eastern front at Tannenburg (1914) and the Masurian Lakes (1915). He became Chief of Staff of the Third Army in August 1916, forming with Ludendorff the Third Supreme Command. . 1 Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment Captain Herbison was wounded on 15 September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He died of his wounds, aged 23, on 17 September. He was killed, accidentally, whilst at Bombing School in Aldershot on 15 May 1918. He was 42. Lieutenant Jones received mentions in Army Orders 19 November 1915 and in the Somme Despatches, 1916. Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny (1883 - 1973) Russian cavalryman, military commander during the Russian Civil War, Polish-Soviet War and World War II, and a close political ally of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

. 1 Battalion, The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) (attached Gold Coast Regiment, West African Field Force) Lt Thompson was the first British officer to be killed in action during the First World War. He was commanding a small force of French Senegalese troops in an action against German forces at Chra, German Togoland, when he was killed, aged 24, on 22 August 1914. A Special French Army Order was published on 20 October commending his gallantry and he was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palms. The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

. 1 Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment Lt Scott enlisted in 2/5 Battalion, the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment on 14 September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of war. He received his commission in the same regiment on 10 November and served in that capacity until he was seconded for duty with 41 Provisional Battalion on 20 June 1915. Lt Scott was gazetted temporary lieutenant on 31 August 1915 and temporary captain on 6 August 1916. He served as adjutant of 41 Provisional Battalion during August -November 1916 at which point he was restored to the Establishment and reverted to his substantive rank of second lieutenant. Lt Scott was posted to the Western Front on 29 December 1916 and attached to 1 Battalion The King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. On 10 April 1917, he was wounded at Fampoux, near Arras and died from his wounds, aged 24, in No. 7 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, two days later. Baron Roman Nikolai Maximilian von Ungern-Sternberg (December 29, 1885 - September 15, 1921) was a Baltic Swedish-Russian Yesaul (Cossack Captain), a Russian hero of World War I and Lieutenant-general at the time of civil war in Russia and Mongolia, who 'liberated' Mongolia from Chinese rule in February - March 1921. In June he invaded Southern Siberia trying to raise an anti-communist rebellion, but was defeated by the Red Army in August 1921. An independent and brutal warlord in pursuit of pan-monarchist goals in Mongolia and territories east of Lake Baikal during the Russian Civil War that followed the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Ungern von-Sternberg's goals included restoring the Russian monarchy under Michael Alexandrovich Romanov and the Great Mongol Empire, with Outer Mongolia under Bogd Khan as part of it. 22 Battalion, Royal Fusiliers Lance Corporal R L W Bartlett served with A Company, 22 Battalion in the Somme sector of the Western Front. The battalion was raised in September 1914 and posted to France in November 1915, where it served on the Somme from July 1916 to March 1917. In A Company, Lance Corporal Bartlett served alongside the author H H Munro, who wrote under the name of Saki. On 17 February 1917, the battalion formed part of a major British assault in the Miraumont area of the River Ancre. Lance Corporal Bartlett's company was to advance over frozen ground to attack the East Miraumont Road at the foot of Hill 130. However a thaw turned the ground into an icy morass, negating the effectiveness of the moving artillery barrage which was supposed to provide cover for the advancing troops. In the ensuing fighting, A Company came under heavy German machine-gun fire and became disorientated. As the men sought to recover their position, they became surrounded and were killed or capt

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (18 December 1878 - 5 March 1953) was the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953. While formally the office of the General Secretary was elective and was not initially regarded as top position in the Soviet state, after Vladimir Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin managed to consolidate more and more power in his hands, gradually putting down all opposition groups within the party. Stalin's idea of socialism in one country became the primary line of the Soviet politics. He dominated Soviet politics and the USSR through the Great Purges of the 1930s, then the catastrophic Second World War, remaining in power until his death in 1953.

He had worked at the Stock Exchange since 1872, and was a keen athlete being particularly well known as a cricketer. In October, he transferred to the Inns of Court Corps and received his commission on 11 January 1915. Lt Ogilvie was posted to the Western Front on 3 September 1915 and was killed in the trenches three weeks later on 27 September. He was aged 21. Sir Henry Tizard, K.C.B. F.R.S., F.R.A.S. F. Inst. P., was Chairman of the British Association meeting which was held at Brighton from September 8-15. It was Sir Henry Tizard's powerful brain and fine scientific mind that enabled the R.A.F. to win the Battle of Britain. Born in 1885, he became Assistant Controller of Experiment and Research to the R.A.F. towards the end of the First World War. At the beginning of the last war he was the first and only civilian member of the Air Council. In January 1947, Sir Henry, who was then Chairman of the Defence Research Policy Committee, was also appointed Chairman of an Advisory Council on Scientific Policy to advise the Lord President of the Council on the Government Scientific policy.
