Coast Guard Photographer Shoots Wakde Invasion. From a Coast Guard-manned LST, which was among the first of the big tank landing ships to hit the beach, Coast Guard combat photographer James C. W. Lunde, of Park Ridge, Illinois, shot an exceptional series of pictures of the American conquest of Wakde Island, close off the northern shore of Dutch New Guinea. Wakde, with its air strip, fell after strong resistance by Jap snipers and machinegunners when the invading waves struck the beach.
