Company of Boxers walking on a street in Tianjin (Tientsin), China, in June 1900. They started the Boxer Rebellion against Chinese Christians, European missionaries, and foreign nationals in northwest China. Many came from the country, originally armed only with sticks, their ritual gymnastics, and superstitions. The 1963 movie, 55 DAYS AT PEKING, was based on the war (BSLOC_2017_20_24)

Colonel Wingate spoke fluent Arabic. The Arab is probably Mohammed Fadl, a Sudanese spy from Dafur who was imprisoned and mutilated by the Khalifa. His right hand and left foot had been amputated as punishment.

The Aceh War, also known as the Dutch War or the Infidel War (1873-1914), was an armed military conflict between the Sultanate of Aceh and the Netherlands which was triggered by discussions between representatives of Aceh and the United Kingdom in Singapore during early 1873. The war was part of a series of conflicts in the late 19th century that consolidated Dutch rule over modern-day Indonesia.

10/25/1936. The general commander of the Popular Militias, D. Servando Marenco, reviewing the newly formed units, before joining the different combat fronts.

In state and military portraits, people seated in chairs and in the middle are generally of the highest rank. Amid these Indian soldiers sits a lone British officer. The Bhopal Battalion had seen combat just six years earlier during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, helping to keep Afghanistan a British-friendly buffer against Russias desire to expand into India. This detachment includes a number of Sikhs, identifiable by their neatly trimmed beards and turbans that cover their ears. Members of that religious group were avidly recruited by the British Indian Army due to their reputed ferocity and courage in battle. Detachment of Bhopal Battalion at Indore, 1886.
