Lord Edward Stanley (who famously condemed the policies of Lord Gray's administration in a parliamentary speech that compared them to a game of Thimble Rig) leads a band of policemen who include the Duke of Cumberland, Duke of Wellington, and Sir Robert Peel (the latter had established London's police force in 1829), accompanied by Daniel O'Connell.. American 1864 In 1864 Homer designed two series of lithographed collectors cards titled Life in Camp for the Boston publisher Louis Prang & Co. Unlike his serious war-time images for Harpers Weekly, the artist felt free to inject humor into these miniature comments on army life which include images of soldiers resting, eating and reacting to army life. Here, a soldier hurries from his tent, carrying his boots, to join ranks assembled in the background. By 1864 the war was entering its final months and formerly sacrosanct subjects could be approached more lightly.

The caption for this engraving reads: Louis XIII enters the ring. The person on foot at right is Squire M. de la Sourdiere. He was a monarch from the House of Bourbon. He ruled as king of France from 1610 to 1643. He also served as king of Navarre from 1610 to 1620 when the crown of Navarre was part of the kingdom of France. Louis XIII was the son of Marie de Medicis and Henri IV of France.

Thanksgiving Day in the Army - After Dinner: The Wish-Bone (from "Harper's Weekly," Vol. VIII) December 3, 1864 After Winslow Homer American Homers image of Union soldiers breaking a wishbone in camp after a Thanksgiving meal in 1864 conveys the hope that the Civil War might be drawing to a close. Indeed, within four months the Confederate capital of Richmond would fall and General Robert　E. Lee would surrender. Superficially naturalistic, the scene is filled with objects that can be read symbolically: war drums are stacked peaceably in the background, and soldiers rest, smoke, and play, the only visible weapon a sheathed sword. The centrality of a simple game associated with a shared family feast suggests where the soldiers thoughts are focused. By this date Homer was devoting himself primarily to painting, and the solemn, monumental figures here reflect his compositions in oil..
