The Boxer Uprising or Boxer Rebellion was a Chinese rebellion from November 1899 to September 7, 1901 against foreign influence in trade, politics, religion and technology in China during the final years of the Qing Dynasty. The assassination of the German ambassador and the siege of foreign diplomatic legations in Peking prompted Britain, France, Germany, the US, Russia, Japan, Italy and Austria-Hungary to form the Eight Nation Alliance and intervene militarily. Government soldiers advancing into Paris to suppress the Commune, 24th May 1871. The Paris Commune was established when the citizens of Paris, many of them armed National Guards, rebelled against the policies of the conservative government formed after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The left-wing regime of the Commune held sway in Paris for two months until government troops retook the city in bloody fighting in May 1871. From a private collection.
