General Gabriele D'Annunzio, (1863 - 1938), Italian writer, poet, journalist, playwright and soldier during World War I. He occupied a prominent place in Italian literature from 1889 to 1910 and later political life from 1914 to 1924. He was often referred to under the epithets Il Vate ("the Poet") or Il Profeta ("the Prophet"). Some of his ideas and aesthetics influenced Italian fascism and the style of Benito Mussolini and, thereby, Adolf Hitler; he has been described as "the father of Fascism".

Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II on board the German imperial yacht, Hohenzollern, on 4 June 1909. Nicholas had sailed on a barge fromm Shtandart to the Hohenzollern, stayed half and hour, then left to await the return visit. A reciprocal photograph was taken on board Shtandart of the Kaiser, the imperial couple and their children, with the large, expensive dolls the Kaiser had brought. Date: 1909

The Legion's primary function in the 19th and early 20th century was the expansion and protection of France's overseas territories. The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 reversed the suspension of the Ottoman parliament by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, marking the onset of the Second Constitutional Era. A landmark in the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the Revolution arose from an unlikely union of reform-minded pluralists, Turkish nationalists, Western-oriented secularists, and indeed anyone who accorded the Sultan political blame for the harried state of the Empire.
