Grenelle, Siege of Paris by Paul roux, 1870-1871. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. The French commander, General Trochu, initially opted to rely on a static defence based on the city's fortifications rather than trying to break through the Prussian encirclement. The Prussians, meanwhile, had no intention of invading the city, relying on a blockade to compel its capitulation. Eventually the French made several attempts to break out, but all were unsuccessful. The city held out despite famine and great hardship until a bombardment with heavy siege guns led to its surrender on 28 January 1871. From a private collection.

Arrival in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland: The Cable Passed to the Paddle-box Boat of the Terrible, etc. Artist: Robert Charles Dudley (British, 1826-1909). Dimensions: Sheet: 10 5/8 × 15 3/8 in. Date: 1866.One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. Amid the chaos in the centre of this drawing one man is being despatched by a pistol shot, while another succumbs to a deadly sabre thrust. At the lower left a horse without a rider gallops into the scene, which represents an attack by German mercenaries in Wellingtons army.
