July 271742 June 19, 1786, frequently misspelled Nathaniel) was a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, known for his successful command in the Southern Campaign, forcing British general Charles Cornwallis to abandon the Carolinas and head for Virginia.

Horatio Gates ca. 1793-94 Gilbert Stuart American This portrait, representing Revolutionary War hero General Horatio Gates (1728-1806), was painted long after he led his troops to victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Although his military career was turbulent, the English-born Gates is represented in the uniform of a brigadier general, decorated with the medal that Congress ordered struck to commemorate his triumph at Saratoga. In his hand is a copy of the Saratoga Convention. The painting descended in the family of Gates' good friend, Colonel Ebenezer Stevens. The work is a blend of Stuart's more painterly English style and the Copleyesque forthrightness that defined American high style.. Horatio Gates 12667

The Yorktown Campaign in 1781 brought an end to the military operations of the American Revolution (1775-1783). In August of 1781, a French fleet blockaded the Chesapeake Bay. By September, General George Washington, aided by French troops under Rochambeau, broke through the outer defenses of Yorktown, Virginia. On October 19, 1781, the British under the command of General Cornwallis surrendered.
