The Prison Without Bars -- The men sleep in dormitories - a single room is the privilege of a leader. Good conduct prisoners at Sudbury, Derbyshire, prison, live a life far removed from that of the usual grim goal. Formerly an American Army hospital, Sudbury is now a minimum security prison holding some 300 men who are all "Star" or first offender prisoners - later a selected minority of men who have already been to prison will gradually be introduced. The establishment has hot showers and a Theatre, and the men are allowed the maximum amount of freedom within the prison bounds. March 12, 1949. (Photo by Fox Photos).
