African American veteran Isaac Woodard was blinded by Batesburg, South Carolina police. Feb. 12, 1946. He was arrested, and beaten in jail in apparent retaliation for arguing with a bus driver. He was still in his military uniform, hours after being honorably discharged from the United States Army.
