Five Weeks After -- Five weeks after the Gloucestershire Regiment's epic battle on the River Imjin, United Nations forces retook the area in their drive to the 38th Parallel and an official British Army photographer went over the positions to photograph the scenes of this gallant action.Little had changed since that day when the order for the Battalion to break out was received. True, the weeks of spring had added a new and rugged beauty to the countryside, the hills were greener, streams had changed to rivers and new streams had appeared where none had been before, but the grimly defended slit trenches were still there with mounds of spent cartridge cases to testify to the staunchness of its defenders. In the monsoon - washed Burma jungle the 14th. Army have made military history. They have inflicted on the Japanese, who counted on their withdrawal, a major battle front by air at the beginning of the monsoon, and for over three months fought and beat the Japanese under the 'world's most depressing conditions. It is improbable that one of those men have been dry during that entire period, rain soaked ceaselessly through clothing and sheleters; and in addition the heat was intense. Now the rains are ending (October) and in a week or so the mountain roads will be thick with dust. Then both sides will brace themselves for the real "compaigning season". January 22, 1945.
