A Coast-Guard manned LCVP races back through a maze of sunken ships in the harbor of Marseille to bring in another load of Yankee invaders during the conquest of that Mediterranean base. Nazis, fleeing northward, scuttled the ships that show in the background.

A 3-Inch Gun Blows Smoke Rings. Floating out from the mouth of a three inch gun, a giant smoke ring provides novelty to battle practice aboard a Coast Guard combat cutter in the North Atlantic. Coast Guard gunners are kept sharp for battle by frequent drills while on convoy and patrol duty.

Fatally Hit LCI. The crew of this fatally his Coast Guard LCI craft has just evacuated troops and wounded to an assault transport and pulled away from the ship. All got safely off before the vessel capsized and sank off the French coast.

Minesweeper Before its Final Plunge. "The USS Tide, a minesweeper that preceded the invasion armada to the coast of Normandy, dies in the waters off France. This striking picture, made from a Coast Guard fighting ship, shows the stricken vessel burning as two other ships stand by to pick up survivors. A few moments later the Tide sinks to the bottom." Coast Guard Cutter Sinks Sub. Coast Guard Cutter sinks sub. Effect of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPENCER's fire is visible in this closeup shot of the U-Boat, taken as the battle raged. The Nazi standing by the stanchion amidships disappeared a moment after this picture was taken by a Coast Guard photographer. The U-Boat had been trying to sneak into the center of the convoy.

Coast Guard "Sub Busters" Rescue Survivors. One of the sturdy little 83-foot coast guard cutters, formerly dubbed "sub busters" for their work in the North Atlantic, pulls alongside a coast guard assault transport off the coast of France to transfer survivors for medical attention. This sub buster, named "Miss Fury" by her crew, and her sister ships have rescued many hundreds during the European invasion, receiving the plaudits of the war correspondents.

Destroyer Escort Provisions Norse Tanker at Sea. Having received 11 cases of emergency provisions from a Coast Guard-manned destroyer escort, a Norwegian tanker rejoins a convoy headed toward the U.S. coast somewhere in the North Atlantic. As the ships parted the Coast Guard-manned destroyer escort signalled this message: "We'll see you under the bright lights of New York.".

Getting Ready To Lower Away. The boat crew ready the lifeboat in preparation to "lower away". The gripe has been kicked loose from the pelican hook and the fore and after falls are taut under the boat's weight. "Make it lively, lads!" is all that is needed, for these men know their routine in the vital life boat drill. Violent Storm Battered Normandy Breakwater of Sunken Freighters During Invasion Landings. Reducing the violence of a storm that blew in upon Normandy invasion operations soon after D-Day, a breakwater of sunken freighters shielded Allied landings and cut down the toll of destruction. Coast Guard officers, thoroughly briefed in their job, helped direct the planned sinking of 23 ships to form a breakwater. This photo, made by a Coast Guard combat photographer aboard an LCI(L), shows a mountainous wave spending its fury against the bulwark.

First Casualty Comes Off Beach in Ryukyus. An American soldier of the 10th Army's 77th Division is the first casualty of the assault into the Ryukyu Island chain close to the Jap homeland. Wounded by a Jap sniper on the beach of Aka Shima in the Keramas, he is carried by Coast Guardsmen through the big bow doors into the tank deck of a Coast Guard-manned LST participating in the operation. The Aka Shima landing was six days before the Easter invasion of Okinawa.

Leyte Casualty Carried Aboard Coast Guard-Manned LST. Leyte Casualty Carried Aboard Coast Guard-Manned LST. A wounded American is carried through the swirling surf to the ramp of a Coast Guard-manned LST shoved into the sands of Leyte island in the Central Philippines. He will be cared for by the surgical team on the Coast Guard ship until transfer to a land hospital in a safer area.

Bomb Bursts Along a Pacific Beach. This picture, taken from a Coast Guard landing craft, shows a concentration of bomb blasts along the beach of a Pacific island in practice amphibious invasion maneuvers.

They Battled the Sea Alone. Battling rough seas and rougher weather in an open life-boat, these survivors of a torpedoed United Nations' vessel won their grim, exhausted fight to live. Following wracking days at sea they were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter when a Coast Guardsman spotted them from the crow's nest bobbing up and down on the rolling mid-Atlantic waves.

A Tale of the Winter Sea The American ship Montana, her rudder gone, was sighted recently by the British ship Poland. An imminent peril from the winter sea, a cable was carried to the Montana and though it broke twice, after a fierce struggle the Montana was safe in Halifax. Photo shows at risk of their lives a half dozen men being lowered in a small boat from the Poland to carry the line to the helplessly wallowing Montana.

The Coast Guard Lands 'em From an LST. Doors Open, Ramp Down - As a Coast Guard-manned LST hits the beach of a Jap-held island in the Pacific, the big bow doors swiftly swing open and the ramp is lowered. Out pour the fighting men and later the tanks to rout the Nip defenders.

Divine Services En Route to Okinawa. On the fantail of a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport, the ship's chaplain conducts church services for troops and Coast Guardsmen on the way to the assault upon the Jap stronghold of Okinawa in the Ryukyus. Americans in a mighty 1,400 ship task force looked for bitter resistance, but were surprised to storm practically empty beaches in the islands 325 miles for the Jap mainland.

Coast Guard Helicopter Demonstrates Air-Sea Rescue with New U-Type Equipment. Survivor is spotted.. A Coast Guard Sikorsky helicopter, flown by Coast Guard Commander F. A. Erickson from the Coast Guard Air Station at Brooklyn, N.Y., demonstrates the use of a new U-Type rescue harness in pulling shipwreck survivors from the Sea. The tests made off the Atlantic Coast were aimed to show the value of the device in rough seas, which would prevent the helicopter from alighting on the surface of the ocean. The "shipwreck survivor" in this simulated rescue is Coast Guardsman Lewis T. Marshall, Aviation Machinist's Mate Second class of Peabody, Mass. Commander Erickson lives in Tacoma, Wash.

A U.S. Coast Guard combat photographer caught this picture of an American warship giving the Germans defending the shore a jarring blast during the early morning hours of the invasion of Salerno. USS West Virginia in 1905. Photo taken by a photographer from the Committee on Public Information in 1918. The ship, originally named USS West Virginia, was renamed USS Huntington on June 19, 1914. It was commissioned on May 13, 1905, and decommissioned on October 2.

US warship towing the captured German raider "Alexander Agassiz" into an American port during World War I. The photo was taken on March 29, 1918, by a photographer from the Signal Corps, U.R.A. The image was censored and released by the War College Division Laboratory on April 6, 1918.

Americans Storm the Outposts of Okinawa. Landing craft of a 1,400 ship task force hit the beaches of Geruma Shima a few days before the smashing blow into Okinawa, principal Jap bastion in the Ryukyus about 350 miles from the enemy's mainland. Here, Coast Guard-manned and Navy landing craft with Army LVT's go in with a rolling surf to unload soldiers of the 77th Army division on Geruma Shima. This picture is an excerpt from a U. S. Coast Guard movie film rushed back by plane from the invasion area.

LCIS Close in for Invasion of Cape Sansapor. Columns of troop-packed LCI's trail in the wake of a Coast Guard-manned LST en route for the invasion of Cape Sansapor, Japanese base on the western end of Dutch New Guinea. The deck of the LST is closely packed with motorized fighting equipment, while anti-aircraft guns are manned ready to meet enemy attacks from the sky. Photograph of a U.S. Marine Standing By a Wrecked Japanese Landing Barge. Jap Landing Barge Knocked Out at Saipan. This battered, shell-pocked wreck was a Japanese landing barge before it was caught in the fury of the American assault upon Saipan in the Marianas. Sprawling grotesquely in death at the feet of a U.S. Marine are three Japs who fell in the crushing sweep of American soldiers, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and sailors.

Coast Guard Rescues Survivors of Torpedoed Transport in North Atlantic. Exhausted, half-frozen survivors of a torpedoed U.S. troop transport in the North Atlantic, cling to the tiny mast of their life boat as they are rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard Combat Cutter. The transport, converted from the liner Henry R. Mallory was sunk by an enemy U-boat during a snow-storm early in 1943. More than 300 soldiers, sailors and Marines were missing when the Coast Guard Cutters BIBB and INGHAM fetched the survivors from the icy seas, the War Shipping Administration announced today (Nov. 5, 1944). The transport, in convoy, was heading for Iceland. This picture, made by a Coast Guard Combat Photographer, shows survivors being taken aboard the BIBB.

A nationally known illustrator in civilian life, Floherty enlisted in the Coast Guard over two years ago and has served on Coast Guard Combat Cutters in the Atlantic and various Coast Guard-manned landing ships in the Pacific. His wife, Hester B. Floherty resides at 47 East 72nd St., New York City, N.Y.
