Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

Fifth Cross the Volturno: A fifth Army Bofors gun in the grounds of King Victor Emanuel's palace at Caserta (on the railway just south of the River Volturno). During the hours of darkness of Oct. 14/15 1943, the Fifth Army launched its big attack on the Volturno River. Soon several bridgeheads were in Allied hands and armour began to make the river crossing. Now (19.10.43) Allied forces are well over the river at several points and have occupied the town of Cancello, about 6 miles from the coast

Rotesque Gas Masks tell the story of war manoeuvres on the Mornington Peninsula, near Moorooduc, today. The men in the gas masks belong to the Third Divisional Signal Corps. They lined up before setting out to establish communications between strategic points. Even the horses were protected against "gas attacks" by nose bags filled with damp straw. February 07, 1938.

Biggest Army Maneuvers Begin -- The biggest Army maneuvers to be held in this country began early this morning. Known as" Surprise Packet", the exercise involves some 50,000 troops, including Territorials, and 12,000 vehicles, and is being staged over eight counties. Attacks Japanese In Burma Road Sector -- Intrymen of the U.S. Mars Task Force, using a light machine gun and rifles, battle with the Japanese for control of a sector of the old Burma Road miles (129 km.) north of Lashio, Burma. As part of the Allied campaign to clear the Burma and Ledo Road areas of Japanese forces, the Mars Task Force marched 15 miles (24 km.) across jungle- covered mountains to get behind the enemy and drive him from this section of the road. The Japanese were attempting to block the overland supply route from China 1 to India--which was cleared recently. The Americans, 9 who had hacked a jungle path for their artillery, killed more than 350 enemy troops in the surprise assault. When the Ledo and Burma Roads were joined, Chinese President Chiang Kai-shek named the new vital highway the Stilwell Road in honor of U.S. General Joseph W.
