Police Barricade Hong Kong Streets Against Rioters -- Armed with shields and batons, steel-helmeted police guard a barricade in the Russell Street area of Hong Kong. Extreme right is Sub-Inspector T. W. Wheeler of the Marine Police. Barbed-wire barricades were hastily thrown up in Hong Kong after a pitched battle between police and rioters in which nearly fifty people, some of them women, were injured. Police threw tear gas bombs into angry crowds massed in Russell Street in sympathy with tramwaymen, who, since December 22, have been on strike for more pay. Rioters brandished chair-leg clubs, bottles and bricks as they stormed down on the police cordon. It was estimated that, at the peak of the bloody battle, more than 10,000 people crowded the Russell Street area where union and tramway offices are located. February 6, 1950. The surrender of the Empire of Japan on September 2, 1945, brought the hostilities of World War II to a close. By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy was incapable of conducting operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Late in the evening of August 8, 1945, in accordance with the Yalta agreements, but in violation of the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, and soon after midnight on August 9, 1945, the Soviet Union invaded the Imperial Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. Later that same day, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb, this time on the city of Nagasaki. The combined shock of these events caused Emperor Hirohito to intervene and order the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War to accept the terms the Allies had set down in the Potsdam Declaration for ending the war.
