Coast Guard Takes Nazi Officers as Prisoners. Coast Guard takes Nazi officers as prisoners. The two blindfolded men are the officers of a once proud Nazi U-Boat. they were taken prisoner in mid-Atlantic by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, which rammed and shelled the sub. Here they are being transferred to shore authorities. The Nazi sub was the last of six encountered by the Coast Guard cutter in a single twenty-four-hour period. Besides sinking it, the Coast Guard attacked several of the others with results far from comforting to the enemy.

Coast Guard Doctor Recruits Them Young. Dr. Wilbur K. Bennett, Lieutenant (j.g.), of Omaha, Neb., a U.S. Public Health Service physician assigned to duty with the Coast Guard, is shown beside the station wagon in which he visits his patients on Cape Hatteras Bank off the coast of North Carolina. A wind-swept emerged sand bar, this barren 60-mile splinter of sand is the home of people whose lives are inexorably tied up with the Coast Guard, the only occupations being fishing and the Service. There are no civilian doctors on the island and Dr. Bennett has been authorized to care for civilians as well as service men -- the only such authorization given a military doctor in this country. Since last September, Dr. Bennett has delivered almost two score babies. A bit of humor unconsciously comes into being each time the physician steps into his station wagon to attend a child birth. Inscribed in bold letters on the side of the vehicle is the legend, "U.S. Coast Guard Recruiting Service.".

Cadets' Annual Summer Cruise. In the North Atlantic on the Coast Guard Cutter ROCKAWAY, Coast Guard cadets are shown holding target balloons. These balloons are inflated with helium gas and released as targets for the 40mm and 20mm guns. The ROCKAWAY accompanies the 3-masted training ship EAGLE on the U.S. Coast Guard Cadet Practice Squadron's annual summer cruise to European ports. Destroy German Radio Base in Greenland. This German prisoner, "Dr. Sense", takes a long look from the deck of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter blank at the site of the captured German Army radio base on the Greenland shore. He was captured by U.S. soldiers and Coast Guardsmen, operating as a task force, when he came back to the base shortly after the Americans landed. He'd been building a grave over the body of a boy who had been a member of the Danish scouting party that discovered the German base.

17 Sons and Daughters in the Coast Guard. "Nipper," the proud papa (left), and his better half, "Scrappy" hold a record of some sort with 17 sons and daughters serving as mascots aboard Coast Guard-manned fighting ships in the Pacific combat areas. Shown at their home at a Coast Guard base radio station in the Pacific, "Nipper" and "Scrappy" appear a bit lonely, but who wouldn't be lonely with 17 from their family gone to the wars The pups, raised in three litters, are mascots aboard Coast Guard-manned invasion transports, LST's, supply ships, sub chasers, tankers, LCI's and combat cutters. Incidentally, "Scrappy" assures that more paw prints will be added to the service poster as soon as she bears more mascots for the U.S. Coast Guard.

"Doc Sunshine" Makes His Rounds. No. 2 in series of three. Every Buddy's Pal - "Doc Sunshine," mascot of a Coast Guard-manned troop transport, plays no favorites. He is strong for his seafaring mates and strong for the soldiers heading overseas as reinforcements or coming back as casualties. The Iwakura Mission or Iwakura Embassy (Iwakura Shisetsudan) was a Japanese diplomatic journey around the world, initiated in 1871 by the oligarchs of the Meiji period. Although it was not the only such 'mission', it is the most well-known and possibly most important for the modernization of Japan after a long period of isolation from the West. It was first proposed by the influential Dutch missionary and engineer Guido Verbeck and was probably based on the model of the Grand Embassy of Peter I. The Iwakura mission followed several such missions previously sent by the Shogunate, such as the Japanese Embassy to the United States (1860), the First Japanese Embassy to Europe (1862), and the Second Japanese Embassy to Europe (1863).

Brian Kelly, a fireman with the 90th CES watches as rescue people raise an Launch Facility maintenance person who slipped and fell into the launch tube of U-1 during Thursday's confined space rescue exercise. Now on duty on a Coast Guard-manned assault transport in the South Pacific, Chief Casey says, "There's plenty of room on my other arm for the ports ahead--Manila, Yokohama, and Tokyo." In the years ahead, he adds, "I'll just roll up my sleeves and show my grandchildren where I served with the Coast Guard in the world war.".
