. 1/6 Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment Lt Embrey served on the Western Front where he was twice Mentioned in Despatches and was awarded the Military Cross. He was killed in action, aged 20, at Bohain Wood on 20 October 1918. Lt Embrey is buried at Fresnoy-le-Grand Communal Cemetery. Photograph presented by his mother, Mrs Embrey of Stoke-on-Trent. . 20 (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers Private Newton was from Gateshead. His service number was 16/1379. He was killed in action on 8 September 1917 aged 33. . 5 Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) Lieutenant Barrows was the only son of a Nottingham family and was awarded scholarships at Sedbergh School and Pembroke College, Oxford. He received his commission in August 1917 and was posted to the Western Front the following month. Lt Barrows served as adjutant from April to August 1918 and was awarded the Military Cross. He was killed in action, aged 20, whilst commanding E Company during the Battle of St Quentin Canal (also known as the Battle for the Hindenburg Line) on 3 October 1918, just five weeks before the end of the First World War. . 4 Battalion (attached 11 Battalion), East Yorkshire Regiment Lt Van Oppen enlisted in August 1914 and received his commission in September 1915, rising to the rank of lieutenant in July 1917. He was posted to the Western Front on 6 April 1918; was wounded on 12 April and died in hospital, aged 31, on 16 April 1918 - just ten days after arriving at the front. . Territorial Force Reserve Lt Col Scratchley (1870 - 1936) served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps during 1891 - 1906. He saw action in the Second Anglo-Boer War, during which conflict he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, he served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Territorial Force Reserve from 15 August 1915 until April 1918. Sir Winston Churchill, (30 November 1874 24 January 1965) as an officer in the South African Light Horse. 1899. He was among the first British troops into Ladysmith and Pretoria, during the Boer war. British Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.

Albert I (1875-1934) King of the Belgians 1909-1934, head and shoulders portrait in military uniform. He resisted German demands in 1914 and fought with Belgian army when Belgium was invaded.

. Royal Horse Artillery Second Lieutenant George Arthur Nicholls served with the Royal Horse Artillery. He was a member of the Officers' Training Corps in Berkhamsted prior to the First World War. He joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a private on 14 August 1914, aged 19. He left for France with the British Expeditionary Force in September 1914, returning to Britain on 3 June 1915. On 5 July 1915, he was discharged from the Honourable Artillery Company, taking up a commission with the Special Reserve, Royal Field Artillery. He suffered a machine-gun bullet wound to the right wrist on 30 April 1916 in Albert, France, while he was serving with C Battery, 95th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. The bullet entered the forearm just above the wrist, emerging at the base of the thumb. Nicholls spent time at Lady Cooper's Hospital in Winchester in May 1916 and was granted a leave of absence from May until August 1916. In September 1916 he was deemed fit for home service and was posted to

. 10 Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Captain Leo Jude was killed in action, aged 20, at Beaumont Hamel on 15 November 1916. During his subsequent service on the Western Front, he was awarded the Military Cross and twice Mentioned in Despatches. Aged 24, he was killed in action at High Wood on 16 September during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz. William 'Bill' Tilghman (1854-1924), fought with Wyatt Earp during the Dodge City War (dates), went on the become a deputy US Marshal, in Oklahoma Territory. With fellow Marshalls, Heck Thomas and Chris Madsen, known as the Three Guardsmen they made 300 arrests. In 1915, he co-wrote, directed, and starred in the movie THE PASSING OF THE OKLAHOMA OUTLAWS. He died on November 1, 1924, after being shot by Wiley Lynn, a corrupt Prohibition Agent.
