On May 9, 1864, in the North Sea, a Danish squadron defeated the Austrian navy in the Battle of Helgoland (or Heligoland) during the last engagement of wooden warships and the last Danish fleet action. Danish naval commander and vice admiral Edouard Suenson (pictured here in a painting by Otto Bache) defeated an Austro-Prussian naval squadron at this battle during the (Second War of Schleswig. Otto Bache (1839 -1927) was a Danish Realist painter. Many of his works depict key events in Danish history.

Lieutenant General Sir Henry Pottinger, 1st Baronet, GCB, PC (Chinese: 甸乍; 3 October 1789 - 18 March 1856), was an Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who became the first Governor of Hong Kong. Pottinger accepted Foreign Secretary Lord Palmerston's offer of the post of envoy and plenipotentiary in China and superintendent of British trade, thus replacing Charles Elliot. In 1841, when Pottinger was sent to China, Palmerston instructed him to 'examine with care the natural capacities of Hong Kong, and you will not agree to give up that Island unless you should find that you can exchange it for another in the neighbourhood of Canton, better adapted for the purposes in view; equally defensible; and affording sufficient shelter for Ships of War and Commerce'. After Pottinger led the navy and defeated Yishan at Humen, he negotiated the terms of the Treaty of Nanking (1842), which ended the First Opium War and ceded Hong Kong Island to the United Kingdom. Count Nogi Maresuke, GCB (木 希典), also known as Kiten. Count Nogi, (25 December 1849-13 September 1912) was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army and a governor of Taiwan. He was one of the commanders during the 1894 capture of Port Arthur from China, and the subsequent massacre of thousands of Chinese civilians. He was a prominent figure in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, as commander of the forces which captured Port Arthur from the Russians. He was a national hero in Imperial Japan as a model of feudal loyalty and self-sacrifice, ultimately to the point of suicide. In the Satsuma Rebellion, he lost a banner of the emperor in battle, for which he tried to atone with suicidal bravery in order to recapture it, until ordered to stop. In the Russo-Japanese War, he captured Port Arthur but he felt that he had lost too many of his soldiers, so requested permission to commit suicide, which the emperor refused.
