Lieutenant General Sir James Charlemagne Dormer (1834 - 1893) British Army officer. He became Chief of Staff of army of occupation in Egypt in 1882, Deputy Adjutant-General for auxiliary forces in 1885 and General Officer commanding Dublin District in 1886. He went to command the British Troops in Egypt in 1888 and become Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army and a Member of the Council of the Governor of Fort St George in 1891. He died after being mauled by a tiger while commanding the Madras Army

Captain-Commandant Charles F. Shoemaker. Charles F. Shoemaker was born in Glendale, Iowa, on 27 March, 1841. He was appointed Third Lieutenant, Revenue Cutter Service (now U. S. Coast Guard) on 20 November, 1860. He served on various Revenue Cutters Service vessels until he resigned from the Service on 4 April, 1864. He was reappointed Third Lieutenant on 25 June, 1868, and continued to serve through successive ranks and normal routine assignments until he reached the top of his profession when, as a Captain, he was appointed Chief, Division of Revenue Cutter Service. He remained in this position until he reached the statutory retirement age of 64 on 27 March, 1905, and was placed in the Retired List. On 8 May, 1908, he was advanced to the rank of Captain Commandant by act of Congress approved on that date. He died on 11 July, 1913.

The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.
