Portrait of Martinus Alewijn. Children were also portrayed in the Netherlands in the 17th century. This canvas presents Martinus Alewijn, the ten-year-old son of an Amsterdam merchant. He is not simply eternalized in paint as the wealthy city boy that he was, but rather in the guise of a shepherd holding a staff sitting beneath a tree, with a dog and some sheep. These motifs reference country life and hunting. They underscore the family's prominent social standing and affluence.

Made a figure of mockery, Jesus is forced to wear the crown of thorns as well as the short scarlet cloak and carries a reed, meant to evoke a royal scepter. Focusing on the injuries suffered by Jesus, Tissot also notes that, at every step, the woolen cloak would have either rubbed his wounds or stuck to them. PAINTINGS IN SPANISH COLONIAL HOMES The enormous number of paintings acquired by private collectors in colonial Spanish America is borne out by evidence in testamentary, dowry, and other documents of the period. From urban centers to frontier areas, paintings by European and New World artists depicting religious and secular subjects decorated the homes of Creole, peninsular Spanish, mestizo (people of mixed race), and indigenous men and women. The five Andean paintings on this wall were produced for a growing art market by anonymous artists in the workshops of Cuzco. Paintings of religious subjects were prevalent in Spanish America but uncommon in colonial British America; one exception was the New York scripture paintings made for Upper Hudson and Mohawk Valley Dutch families (see illustration). Man in Armor (Mars) Style of Rembrandt Dutch This painting, acquired as by Aert de Gelder, has for decades been assigned either to Rembrandt's cousin Karel van der Pluym (1625-1672), or to Heyman Dullaert (1636-1684), a Rotterdam poet and painter who was Rembrandt's pupil in the early 1650s. The connection with Dullaert is encouraged by Arnold Houbraken's reference (1721) to a canvas by Dullaert, The God of War Mars in a Reflecting Cuirass, that was sold as a Rembrandt in Amsterdam. However, the subject was fairly common (e.g., the famous Man in the Golden Helmet in Berlin, now attributed to an unknown Rembrandt pupil), and the present picture has little in common with Dullaert's few surviving works. Its style and subject do recall several paintings by Van der Pluym, though most of them are of lesser quality.. Man in Armor (Mars) 437416

Portrait of Napoleon I designed 1805, woven 1808-11 After a painting by baron François Gérard French Jacques-Louis David was First Painter to the emperor, but Napoleon did not like the official coronation portrait that David painted during the autumn and winter of 1805. Instead, he preferred a portrait that François Gérard had prepared in 1805 for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It shows Napoleon in the Throne Room of the Tuileries Palace, the seat of the empire. The emperor commissioned a number of repetitions to give to prominent officials, such as his grand-chamberlain, the duc de Tallyrand, and to his numerous brothers and sisters, whom he had installed on thrones throughout western Europe.
