Lt. Robert G. Shaw, received a commission the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry in 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. He fought in the first Battle of Winchester, and the battles of Cedar Mountain, and Antietam. He commanded the 54th Massachusetts, all-black regiment from Feb 15, 1863, until his death July 18, 1863, in the Battle of Fort Wagner. Matthew Broderick portrayed Shaw in the 1989 film GLORY.
