The Review. Artist: Thomas Rowlandson (British, London 1757-1827 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 8 1/4 x 12 1/2 in. (21 x 31.8 cm). Date: ca. 1800.Rowlandson here gently satirizes the military, with the long blue coat of the central officer suggestive of the British navy. The company seems to await orders, since officers stand with legs apart and arms crossed, and two drummers at right have laid down their instruments. The full-coated uniforms indicate a mid-eighteenth century subject, even though Rowlandson worked during the England's extended conflict with Napoleonic France, between 1793 and 1815. Peter Francisco, the 'Virginia Giant', was an unusual Patriot hero of the American Revolution. Separated from his aristocratic Portuguese parents when he was five, was brought up by an uncle of Patrick Henry, Judge Anthony Winston of Virginia. He became the 'Giant of the Revolution'. He best known feat was fighting with, and stealing the horses of several British soldiers in the cavalry of Col. Banastre Tarleton (BSLOC_2019_3_175)
