A wooden crate more than a century old is shown Aug. 26 , 2022, at the Fort McCoy History Center in the historic Commemorative Area at Fort McCoy, Wis. The crate was donated to Fort McCoy by Alan McCoy of Sparta, Wis., who is the grandson of Maj. Gen. Robert Bruce McCoy for whom Fort McCoy is named after. The crate, which once carried lard buckets, traces back to the time of Camp Emery Upton and Camp Robinson in Wisconsin around 1910.

Samurai (), usually referred to in Japanese as bushi (武士) or buke (武家), were the military nobility of medieval and early-modern Japan. By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of rules that came to be known as bushidō. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.

Yi Sun-sin (April 28, 1545 - December 16, 1598) was a Korean naval commander noted for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty. Yi is also known for his innovative use of the 'turtle ship'. He is reputed to be one of the few admirals to have been victorious in every naval battle in which he commanded. Yi was killed by a single bullet in the Battle of Noryang on December 16, 1598. Yi remains a venerated hero among Koreans today.

United Kingdom: 'He did his duty. Will YOU do YOURS' Poster of Field Marshal Frederick Roberts (30 September 1832 - 14 November 1914), 1st Earl Roberts, British general, 1916. Frederick Sleigh Roberts was a Victorian era general of Anglo-Irish heritage who would go on to become one of the most successful British commanders of his time. Born in India, he joined the East India Company Army and served with distinction during the Indian Rebellion, after which he was transferred to the British Army and served in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

Kitchener won fame in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title 'Lord Kitchener of Khartoum; as Chief of Staff (1900-02) in the second Boer war he played a key role in Lord Roberts' conquest of the Boer Republics, then succeeded Roberts as commander-in-chief - by which time Boer forces had taken to guerrilla fighting and British forces imprisoned Boer civilians in concentration camps. His term as Commander-in-Chief (1902-09) of the Army in India saw him quarrel with Viceroy Lord Curzon, who eventually resigned. Kitchener then returned to Egypt as British Agent and Consul-General (de facto Viceroy). In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Lord Kitchener became Secretary of State for War, a Cabinet Minister. One of the few men to foresee a long war, one in which Britain's victory was far from secure, he organised the largest volunteer army that Britain, and indeed the Empire, has seen and a significant expansion of
