Fratelli DAlessandri, photographer (Italian, founded about 1850, dissolved 1930) about 1860 Photograph of a painted portrait of Louis Guérin, a member of the pontifical Zouave army. He is a young man with a mustache. He is posed leaning one arm on a decorative pedestal and has his other hand on his hip. Engraving of a statue of Captain Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), the English explorer, which was planned to be erected at Spilsby, Lincolnshire, in 1861. In 1845 the British Admiralty sent two polar exploration ships, HMS 'Erebus' and HMS 'Terror', to look for the Northwest passage round the northern coast of Canada. Zouave, 2nd Division 1855 Roger Fenton British In 1855 Fenton sailed to Balaklava to document Britains involvement in the Crimean War. His genre scenes capturing elaborately outfitted soldiers of diverse nationalities provided viewers in England with a vicarious experience of war and satisfied their taste for exotic and picturesque imagery. Here Fenton dons the distinctive uniform of a Zouave, a soldier of the French army in Algeria. He poses audaciously, cocking his rifle while glaring with at an unseen enemy. Although Fentons title does not reveal his identity, the slippage between snap shooter and sharp shooter provides a witty subtext to this self-portrait.. Zouave, 2nd Division.
