First Pictures of the New British Mortar Tank - An Avre moves up to the front in France.The work of designing and constructing the devices to breach the stupendous fortifications of the Atlantic Wall was put in hand by the War Office under the direction of the Engineer-in-Chief in 1943. The main equipment of the Assault Royal Engineers which contributed to the initial breach of the Atlantic Wall was the Armoured Vehicle (Royal Engineers) known as the AVRE. The vehicle in general is similar to a Churchill tank. The interior has been specially designed to accomodate a crew of Engineer together with specially guarded explosive charges for assault demolition. November 26, 1944. Victory Day Dress Rehearsal - Tanks at the Tower of London, showing the streets empty of spectators at this early hour.Londoners up early this morning (Sunday) had a preview of the victory Day mechanised parade. Thirty vehicles., including bridge-laying tanks, pontoon trailers, and 40-ton tank transporters, set off from Regent's Park to traverse the official route through South and East London. Object of the rehearsal was to check the timing of the procession and to ensurethat the roads selected are safe for the outsized vehicles.Police cars in radio contact with Scotland Yard reported progress of the column from strategic points along the route. His Majesty the King, accompanied by Queen Sofía, yesterday presided over the commemorative parade for Armed Forces Day, in which more than six thousand men and about five hundred vehicles participated. Also in the presidential gallery were the Infantas Doña Elena and Doña Cristina; the President of the Government, Felipe González; the Minister of Defense, Narciso Serra, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
