First Pictures of the New British Mortar Tank - An Avre moves up to the front in France.The work of designing and constructing the devices to breach the stupendous fortifications of the Atlantic Wall was put in hand by the War Office under the direction of the Engineer-in-Chief in 1943. The main equipment of the Assault Royal Engineers which contributed to the initial breach of the Atlantic Wall was the Armoured Vehicle (Royal Engineers) known as the AVRE. The vehicle in general is similar to a Churchill tank. The interior has been specially designed to accomodate a crew of Engineer together with specially guarded explosive charges for assault demolition. November 26, 1944.
