'Happy Returns'As the Red Star emblem of the Soviet, Fleet is lowered aboard the battleship 'Royal Sovereign' the British destroyer 'Nepal' flies the signal 'Happy Returns' at the ceremonial handing over of the 29,150 tons warship to the Royal Navy here.The battleship was been on loan, under the name 'Archangelsk' to the Soviet Fleet since 1944.She is over 30 years old and will probably be scrapped. Jet Propelled 'Lucy Ashton', 62, Makes History -- The 'Lucy Ashton' speeding over the waters of the Firth of Clyde during the trials. Four screaming Rolls-Royce jet engines shot the veteran Clyde passenger steamer 'Lucy Ashton" over the Firth of Clyde to make marine history as the world's first jet propelled ship. Object of the trials was to solve problems of measuring the resistance of a full-sized hull. The jets serve this purpose because they propel the ship without disturbing the water. From data obtained, the British Shipbuilding Research Association (owners of the vessel) hope to get valuable knowledge on the design and powering of future ships. August 10, 1950. Whenever the wind ceased to blow, the surface of the water soon became covered with thin pancake ice, and as can be seen, a thick coasting of ice formed at all times at water level on any object stationary in the water.From December 23, 1954, when she left Melbourne, to March 23, 1955, when she returned, the Danish motor vessel Kista Dan traveled 12,500 miles under charter to the Antarctic Division of Australia's Department of External Affairs. In that time she visited all three scientific stations established by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions -- on Macquarie Island, Heard Island, and it Mawson on the mainland of the Antarctic continent. Hamburg's Floating ChurchThe church barge in Hamburg Inner Harbour.....Floating on the waters of the inner harbour of Hamburg is an old transport barge which has been reconstructed into a church for all those who sail the river Elbe.The barge was once part of the German Navy, was confiscated by the Americans and given to the church council for this special use.Every Sunday the little church is towed to a different part of the inner harbour, wherever the river transport barges have assembled.There is a room for a Congregation of 200 aboard the church barge and besides the Sunday services, wedding the funeral services are held.
