WW1 - SS 'Sussex' was on a voyage from Folkestone to Dieppe when she was torpedoed by SM UB-29. The ship was severely damaged, with the entire bow forward of the bridge blown off. The 'Sussex' remained afloat and was eventually towed stern-first into Boulogne harbour. Date: 1916

The "Queen Elizabeth" In Dry Dock -- The "Queen Elizabeth" moving into the King George V dry dock at Southampton today, Wednesday. After a hold-up of 12 hours, due to unfavourable weather, the "Queen Elizabeth" moved today, Wednesday, from 101 berth in Southampton new dock to the King George V Dry Dock, for the next stage of her conversion from troopship to luxury passenger liner. The operation of moving the giant liner into the dock, where she will remain for about two weeks, took nearly 90 minutes. She is due to make her "maiden" voyage form Southampton to New York as a passenger liner on October 16th. August 07, 1946.

French Luxury Liner Gets Coat of Gray -- Dull gray hides portions of the white superstructure as the 43,500-ton French luxury liner Ile de France is painted at her berth on Staten Island, at the entrance to New York harbor, where the big ship was tied up shortly after the war started. Forward and rear smokestacks have already been painted black. Other foreign liners were painted gray before going into service as troop transports by the allies. Greatest secrecy shrouds activities aboard the Ile de France, but one report circulated on waterfront is that bulkheads are being cut out of the ship, prior to fitting it us as a hospital vessel. New Cable Ship For Indian Ocea - The cable repair ship Edward Wilshaw, built by Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Neptune Yard, Walker, seen leaving the Tyne for trials.The vessel - of 2,500 gross tons - has been constructed for Cable and Wireless, Ltd., as part of a programme of restoration and modernization of their world-wide cable system.It will be based on Mombasa (East Africa) and employed in the Indian Ocean.The ship is named after Sir Edward Wilshaw, Chairman and Director of Cable and Wireless, Ltd., from 1936 to 1946 and now Governor and Managing Director of Cable and Wireless (Holding) Ltd. Making Her Debut With The Sea.The P. & O. liner 'Chusan' slides into the water at Barrow-in-Furness watched by workmen who helped to build her, Viscountess Bruce performed the launching ceremony.The largest passenger liner in the world to be launched this year was launched by Viscountess Bruce from the yard of Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, yesterday.The vessel is the 24,000-ton P & O liner 'Chusan', which is expected to be completed by next Spring. Photograph of the Cunard Liner 'Berengaria' heading out of Southampton, with tugs, to head to Jarrow to be broken up, December 1938. 'Berengaria' was built at the AG Vulcan shipyard, Hamburg, in 1913 and launched as 'Imperator' for the Hamburg-Amerika Line. She was laid up, unused, during the First World War then given to Britain as war reparations at the ceasation of violence. Cunard bought her shortly thereafter and used her on the Southampton, Cherbourg, New York route from 1921 until 193

Floating coal elevator. Designed and constructed by James Rigg, a British engineer from Chester. It consists of a wide platform on two floating cylinders, which supports a steam engine that generates the necessary movement to the chains and pulleys. In the center, a tower serves as a regulator and mechanical balance. The elevator extends from the deck of the ship to the pontoon by means of the aforementioned tower. Moving buckets, driven by the steam engine, pick up the cargo from the pontoon and throw it, after being automatically weighed, into the ship's coal compartments or warehouses. San Francisco, California July 20, 1961Fog dulls San Francisco's skyline as the streamlined super liner SS Canberra arrives on its maiden voyage. The 45,270-ton, 820-foot long P & O Orient Lines vessel is only the fifth largest passenger line liner in the world, but her passenger capacity is larger than any other vessel. Her 40,000-mile maiden voyage will end in Southampton, England, following stops in Long Beach, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and Indian Ocean ports.
