The figure pictured here represents Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey, an English poet and courtier, in 1540. He did very well in the jousting tournaments held in honor of Henry VIII's marriage to Anne of Cleves. He was the first cousin of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife. The illustration dates to 1882.
