Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (10 November 1759 - 9 May 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788-1805), Schiller struck up a productive friendship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright.

Served with distinction as aide-de-camp to Montcalm in Nrth Amerca during the Seven Years War (1756-1763). Joined the French navy in 1763 and in 1764 colonised the Falkland Islands (Iles Malouines). In 1766-1769, accompanied by naturalists and other scientists, he led the first French circumnavigation of the globe. After the beginning of the French Revolution be devolted himself to science. The climber Bougainvillea is named for him, as is the largest of the Solomon Islands.
