Portrait of Maharaja Rai Singh of Bikaner (reigned 1574-1612), c. 1590. Nur Muhammad (Indian, active c. 1580-1630). Ink and gum tempera on paper; image: 20.5 x 14.6 cm (8 1/16 x 5 3/4 in.); paper: 42.4 x 26 cm (16 11/16 x 10 1/4 in.). Drawings such as this served as models for formal painted portraits of Mughal and Rajput royalty in court workshops. The confident contour lines, delicate shading, and subtle facial expression are the work of the master artist Nur Muhammad (active 1570s-1630s), identified in a Persian inscription on the back. He came from a distinguished family of artists who settled in Bikaner by the mid-1500s. Nur Muhammad also worked at the Mughal court, notably for the mother of Emperor Akbar (reigned 1565-1605). His descendants continue to be recognized as the master artists of Bikaner up to the present day.ARTEVELDE - GRABADO COLOREADO - SIGLO XIX. Location: PRIVATE COLLECTION. Old 19th century engraved illustration, El Mundo Ilustrado 1881Ottoman Sultan Murad II (1404-51), watercolour, 19th centuryMustafa III (January 28, 1717 - January 21, 1774) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1757 to 1774. He was a son of Sultan Ahmed III (1703-30) and was succeeded by his brother Abdul Hamid I (1774-89). An energetic and perceptive ruler, Mustafa III sought to modernize the army and the internal state machinery to bring his empire in line with the Powers of Europe. Unfortunately the Ottoman state had declined so far that any general attempts at modernization were but a drop in the ocean, while any major plans to change the administrative status quo immediately roused the conservative Janissaries and imams to the point of rebellion. Mustafa III did secure the services of foreign generals to initiate a reform of the infantry and artillery. The Sultan also ordered the founding of Academies for Mathematics, Navigation and the Sciences. Well aware of his own military weakness, Mustafa III assiduously avoided war and was powerless to prevent the annexation of the Crimea by Catherine II ofCosimo de Medici.Portrait of a Sri Lankan Tamil Samuel Daniell British 1806-1807 This sensitive portrait of an unidentified Sri Lankan man of Tamil descent is a rare surviving sketch from the short-lived career of Samuel Daniell (1775-1811) younger brother of William Daniell (1769-1837) and nephew of Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), renowned illustrators of Indian landscapes and monuments in the late 18th century. The diminutive scale of this drawing suggests that it is a page from a sketchbook, and its freshness of execution and the artists empathy for his subject all point to this being a study from life. It reveals an artist at ease with his subject, creating a portrait that conveys the dignity and self-esteem to the anonymous sitter, whose proud demeanor is immediately apparent. View more.
